IN STEP WITH...TINA FERRIS by: K Ashcraft (April 2003)
It took me a while to catch up with Tina, whose whirlwind life includes 3 children (one an infant), moving to anew home, a full time job, many devoted dance students and a husband who just returned from National Guard duty in Egypt.
When we finally connected, I asker her for her advice to beginning dance students. "Relax, have fun and enjoy the learning process," she said. Tina also encourages both female and male dance students to get proper ballroom dance shoes. "they're really worth the investment," she says, "and they save the dance floor."
Tina began dancing at the age of 18. She studied with Bob & Julia Powers in San Jose, CA and Phoenix, AZ. She began intensive instructor training after 4 years of dance at the Starlite Ballroom in Sunnyvale, CA and has been teaching for 15 years.
As an instructor, she has competed in many Pro/Am ballroom dance events in Chicago, Scottsdale, Las Vegas, and San Francisco. In the Pro/AM category, the instructor partners with a student but only the student is judged. Of course how well the instructor and student dance together certainly plays a part in the competition, she admits.
Personally, I really love to dance the Latin dances, especially the Rumba and Cha Cha. My husband Steven loves to dance West Coast Swing. But my favorite dance class to teach has to be my Silver Syllabus Waltz class. They are the most dedicated, loyal and best students I've ever had!"
When asked about what future dance plans she has, Tina didn't hesitate, "To dance a lot with my husband Steven!"
